Privacy policy
Effective date: November 2, 2026
BrightReels is an app where children watch short educational videos and a parent holds the account. This page explains, in plain English, what we collect, why, how long we keep it, and how you can delete it. "We" means BrightReels. "You" means the parent or guardian.
The short version
- Only a parent has an account. We ask for your email address and nothing else about you.
- We never ask your child for their name, email, age, photo, location or anything else that identifies them. Children cannot sign in, chat, post or share.
- The children's side of the app has no ads, no ad tracking and no third-party analytics.
- On the children's side, favorite videos, watch counts and the full search history stay on the device. Anonymous search words and daily per-video totals are sent to us. The native app also contacts Expo for software updates, as explained below.
- You can delete your account in the app at any time: Parent area, then Delete account.
What we collect from you (the parent)
Your account
- Email address, to sign you in with a code we email you and to match a purchase you made on our website to your account.
- An account ID we create, and the times you sign in.
When you buy a plan
- Plans are sold on our website only, not through the App Store. Payment is handled by Stripe. Stripe receives your email address and payment details. We never see or store your full card number.
- When Stripe tells us a payment went through, we store your email with your plan, its status and when it renews, so the app can unlock when you sign in with that email.
On our website
- If you give us your email in the pop-up offer or at checkout, we store it with your answer about screen time (if you gave one) and the discount code shown to you.
- Our website (not the app) uses the Meta Pixel and the TikTok Pixel to measure our ads. They may set cookies and send Meta and TikTok information about your visit, such as pages viewed and whether you started checkout. These tools are never used in the app.
- Our website counts visits with Vercel Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and stores no personal information.
- Forms on our website and the sign-in on our web app use Cloudflare Turnstile to block bots. Cloudflare processes technical data about your browser for that purpose, as described in the Cloudflare Turnstile Privacy Addendum.
What the app collects on the children's side
The part of the app a child uses has no sign-in. It keeps the following on the device:
- Searches: the words typed into search and the time.
- Favorites: which videos your child marked with the heart, so they can find them again.
- Videos watched: which videos were watched and how many today. This stays on the device. It runs the free preview (5 free videos) and the count in the Parent area.
The lists of favorites and videos watched stay on the device and are never sent to us or anyone else. Only the anonymous daily totals described below leave the device.
Search words, with no name attached. The app sends us the words your child types into search, so we can make the videos children look for. Before sending, the app removes first names and drops any search with a number, an email or web address, a phrase like "my name" or "I live", more than four words, or a rude word. We receive only those words, how many videos the search found, and the date. No name, device ID, account or IP address is attached. We keep them for up to 24 months.
Which videos get watched, with no name attached. The app also keeps daily totals for each video: how many times it started and how many times it was watched to the end, how many seconds played (paused time does not count), in which tenth of the video plays stopped early, how often it was stopped in the first 3 seconds or watched again, how often it was added to or removed from favorites or played from "My favorites", and how often the quiz after it was shown, answered right or wrong on the first try, or skipped. About once a day the app sends us these totals for earlier days, labelled only with the video and the date, and then deletes them from the device. No name, device ID, account, time of day, app version, language or IP address is attached, so the totals cannot be linked to your child, to your account or to each other. We use them only to decide which videos to make. We keep them for up to 24 months.
We use all of this only to run the app and to choose new videos. We do not use it for advertising and we do not build a profile of a child. The full search history stays on the device; you can clear it by deleting the app.
App updates (Expo)
The native app checks Expo (EAS Update), our software-update provider, for bug fixes when it opens. These requests give Expo your device's IP address and technical details, including the platform, app runtime and update versions, and a random installation code created and stored by the app. The installation code is separate from your BrightReels account and contains no name or email address. If a previous app launch failed, a short technical error message may also be included. Expo processes these requests on our behalf to deliver app updates; see Expo's explanation of its end-user data practices and Expo's privacy policy. We do not use this update traffic for advertising.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
BrightReels is made for children, and the account belongs to the parent. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, such as a name, contact details, photos, voice or location. Grown-up areas of the app (sign-in, plans, the Parent area and account deletion) sit behind a grown-up check. If you believe we have personal information about your child, contact us and we will delete it.
Who we share data with
We do not sell personal information. We share it only with companies that help us run the service, and only for that purpose:
- Supabase: database and sign-in.
- Stripe: payments and plan management.
- Cloudflare: bot protection (Turnstile).
- Resend: sending sign-in codes and support emails.
- Vercel: hosting our website and web app.
- Expo: delivering native app software updates, as described above.
- Meta and TikTok: ad measurement on our website only, as described above.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Your account and email: until you delete your account.
- Purchase records linking your email to a purchase: until you delete your account.
- Emails from the website offer or checkout: until you ask us to delete them, or 24 months after you gave it to us, whichever comes first.
- Children's-side save and watch history and the full search history: stays on your child's device and is not sent to us. Deleting the app removes it. Daily watch totals waiting to be sent are deleted from the device once sent, or after 7 days.
- Anonymous search words and daily per-video watch totals (no name, device or account attached): up to 24 months, then deleted automatically.
- Payment records held by Stripe: as long as tax and accounting law requires.
Deleting your data
- In the app: Parent area, then Delete account. This deletes your account (email and sign-in) and the records linking your email to purchases on our website. It signs you out on that device.
- Deleting your account in the app also cancels a paid plan right away, so it will not renew.
- Anonymous search words and per-video watch totals stay, because they are not linked to your account and cannot identify you or your child.
- To delete emails you gave us on our website, or anything else, email us.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or stop marketing emails at any time. Depending on where you live you may have more rights under local law. Email us and we will reply within 30 days.
Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections. Search words and per-video watch totals reach our database only through our own server functions, which check them again (search words with the same filter, watch totals against the list of our videos); apps cannot read them back. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell you if a breach affects your information, as the law requires.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date above and, if you have an account, email you before the change applies.
